What Does Luminous Mean?
Generally when I write this blog, I craft the message and then create a graphic with the title. To be specific, I go to unsplash.com for the copyright free image, and import it on canva.com to complete the design. However, this time I was on Unsplash looking for images in aqua or turquoise for a poster design I was creating, when this background caught my attention and stirred my spirit. I decided to bring it over to Canva and work with it to see what emerged. As I created the border, the words Luminous Living surfaced, as if asking to be the message.
I had such a strong feeling of being invited to write about this, that I said “OK”. I began with a Google search around the word “luminous”. Dictionary.com described luminous as radiating or reflecting light, illuminated, enlightened, and clear, as in readily intelligible. And that tuned me in to how I would define Luminous Living.
What Is Luminous Living?
Luminous Living is living each day allowing your heart to shine light on what’s true for you. That means giving your heart permission to speak while you listen without interruption or judgement. How do you do that?
There are three steps:
- Stop, look, and listen to what’s in your heart,
- Make choices that align with what’s in your heart,
- Speak from what you know in your heart is true.
Stop, look, and listen to what’s in your heart
In any situation that arises, wait to respond to give your heart a chance to shine light on the issue. Stop to center in a deep sense of love while you engage in slow, relaxed breathing. Allow that love to enlighten your perspective with a clearer sense of the situation. Look for signals that illuminate key elements to consider, and notice what you are feeling emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Listen as your heart weaves these threads into that solid sense of knowing what feels right for you in this situation.
Make choices that align with what’s in your heart
When you take time to listen to your heart, and feel the truth of what is right for you, the next step is to make choices from that heartfelt place of truth. This step is key to Luminous Living. Listening to your heart is of benefit only if you act upon what you receive.
It is not always easy to act in alignment with your heart. It takes practice, faith, and courage. First, the more you do this, the better you get at it. As with anything, practice makes perfect. Eventually you grow to trust the process because of the difference it makes in your life. But it is likely to turn your world around, or upside down, especially if you have been living life making choices to please others.
It takes believing in yourself to act on what’s in your heart. That’s the faith part. It’s asking your heart the deeper questions like: “What lifts my spirit and stirs my soul?”, “What feels truly meaningful to me?”, and “Where do I find true joy?” Listening to your heart in response to those questions is the path to Luminous Living!
And it takes courage! Your heart is the voice of your soul. You are getting direction to open to the fullness of who you are, with each step showing you what’s best for your wholeness and well-being. There will be times this does not fit in with what others believe is best for you, or what your culture believes is best for you. But each time you choose to trust what’s in your heart, you will see evidence it was the right choice for you. And as you continue to make those choices, the wisdom of your heart guiding you to become your true self shines through.
Speak from what you know in your heart is true
When you stop, look, and listen to let your heart speak, and make choices based on what you receive, you begin to see the presence of true wisdom through it all. This wisdom is very different from academic knowledge. You have insight born of experience, an enlightened perspective. You can speak with honesty about what’s true for you, and that honesty is a radiant light in a world confused and suffering.
“The experience of real joy follows those moments of truth when our courage prevails and we take responsibility for the way we live in the world.” The ABC Path toward True Wisdom, Justified Joy, P. 69
When you allow yourself to give full expression to what you know in your heart is true, you are living a more authentic life aligned with what you love, what nourishes your soul, and what gives your life meaning. Being in sync with what’s in your heart, radiating your true self, and living in awe and joy at the wonder of it, is Luminous Living.
Share Your Experience*
When have you allowed your heart to shine light on what’s true in a troubling situation? What was the outcome?
*To get the most from this post, share your experience with a trained spiritual companion. When you listen to your heart for the truth, some established beliefs may come into question. Working them out on your own can be like trying to apply make-up without a mirror, you can’t be sure of your accuracy.
A spiritual companion serves as your mirror. She (or he) is trained to listen with an open heart and reflect back what she is hearing you say that captures the spiritual wisdom of your experience. As with looking in a mirror, you can see if what she is saying conveys what is true for you, or if you need to clarify a few points for a more accurate reflection. This dialogue, called spiritual direction, opens you to a deeper awareness of the divine light, love, and joy guiding your spiritual journey.
