Eight years ago, I began keeping track of the messages that surfaced during my morning meditations. The inspired words that emerged as I sat in silence, centered in my heart, would stay with me throughout the day. Their impact was evident as a change in perspective, or as a connection with something I was seeking to understand, or as an insight into something going on in my life.
Eventually I started using the phrases to create graphics to post on my Wisdom’s Delight Facebook Page. Some phrases become blog themes, and this past year an e-book took shape, Finding Joy in Troubling Times.
My latest project with these meditation messages is a set of free materials to Explore What Your Heart Knows. There are 30 cards with a phrase to offer guidance or insight, and a reproducible Journal Page to track how it connects with with you and your journey.
By shuffling the cards and drawing one as a message for the day, you are inviting the wisdom of your heart to open you to unknown possibilities. Opening to that unknown experience takes courage and trust. And it is the daily practice that takes you on the journey deeper into your true self.
When listening for guidance from your heart, being open to whatever surfaces is more difficult than it sounds. Our minds want to direct where our thoughts go. To move into a heart-centered space with the conscious intention to trust whatever emerges without directing, editing, or censoring, takes courage, trust, and practice.
A Shift in Perspective
The power of this process is in your willingness to see where the message takes you. Here is an example. I made my first set of cards with the meditation messages and asked a friend to mix them up and select one. The message she selected read, “Infinite Love, I am awed by your wisdom”.
We took a few minutes to sit in silence, center in our hearts, and connect with what surfaced. Then we shared our insights. I shared that it spoke to me of my image of our Creator as Infinite Love. She took me by surprise with her response. The message that surfaced in her was that Infinite Love was in awe of her wisdom.
That stirred something deep within me. I even woke up in the night wondering, can we really imagine our Creator being awed by our wisdom?
I sat up, centered in my heart, and listened for guidance, ready to trust whatever surfaced. What came was the image of a loving mother watching her child in awe and wonder. As a mother and a grandmother myself, I immediately connected with that embodied sense of amazement and delight I experienced with my little ones. I was in awe of their intuitive, ingenious young minds as they explored their world. So often I was wowed by their innocent insights, their simple truths, and my heart would fill to overflowing with joy.
What an excellent insight! Knowing how I felt as a mother and grandmother, my heart showed me how I can envision our Creator as Divine Mother and Grandmother, an Infinite Source of Love delighted by us, awed by our developing wisdom as we navigate our world. What a wonderful shift in perspective!

To get the most from this post, share your experience with a trained spiritual companion. When you listen to your heart for the truth, some established beliefs may come into question. Working them out on your own can be like trying to apply make-up without a mirror, you can’t be sure of your accuracy.
A spiritual companion serves as your mirror. She (or he) is trained to listen with an open heart and reflect back what she is hearing you say that captures the spiritual wisdom of your experience. As with looking in a mirror, you can see if what she is saying conveys what is true for you, or if you need to clarify a few points for a more accurate reflection. This dialogue, called spiritual direction, opens you to a deeper awareness of the divine light, love, and joy guiding your spiritual journey.
