Do The Best You Can

By Teresa Lampmann, Spiritual Director and Author

Do the best you can each day

In this image of a forest path with its rich, green ground cover and delicate white flowers, the natural beauty lies in the effortless presence of each element radiating its true color and pattern. There is no pretense to be more, to be other than, to out shine. The power and beauty are in simply being, opening to the moment, and each contributing their essence in as pure and healthy a manner as possible. That is the very definition of “do the best you can each day.”

Be present, open to who you are, contribute your truth, and value what you offer in as pure and healthy a manner as possible.

Fill the day with love and joy

The winding path around the bend into the unknown is an invitation to skip along in merriment and wonder, or waver with each step, in fear and worry. Either way, you must put one foot in front of the other to see what lies beyond. Entering the journey with the intention to appreciate what you see, smell, hear, and feel as wondrous gifts, as embodied expressions of the Source of all creation, sets the expectation to experience joy and delight. This affects your initial reaction to whatever emerges on your journey, and that reaction impacts what happens next. Entering the journey with trepidation, fearing what lies ahead, radiates an energy of angst to whatever emerges and sets in motion a very different encounter.

Start each day aligned with the best in you, a trust in the best in all that is, and a felt sense that all is right with the world. In every encounter imagine that love is at the heart of this experience. Call forth your wisdom and compassion in response, and notice what happens.

Let your light radiate truth

In this verdant image, the green growth provides evidence of a vibrant life. Theirs is a story of an interconnected network, above ground and below, in which each plant contributes to a healthy, balanced ecosystem. As a “one of a kind” expression of our Source, we too are each an integral part of an interconnected network of light and love. Giving expression to our true self, to the wisdom and love we feel in our heart, is how we radiate evidence of a vibrant life and contribute to the well-being of our world in a healthy, balanced way.

Seek to know your true self, what you love, what gives you joy. Define for yourself what joy looks like and feels like. Design your life to include more of those experiences every day. Savor them, and let the joy in your heart radiate your truth!

Share Your Story

When have you witnessed another person being fully present in the moment and felt a natural vibrancy radiating from her or him? When have you been fully present as your true self and felt in complete harmony with the moment?

To get the most from this post, share your experience with a trained spiritual companion. When you listen to your heart for the truth, some established beliefs may come into question. Working them out on your own can be like trying to apply make-up without a mirror, you can’t be sure of your accuracy.

A spiritual companion serves as your mirror. She (or he) is trained to listen with an open heart and reflect back what she is hearing you say that captures the spiritual wisdom of your experience. As with looking in a mirror, you can see if what she is saying conveys what is true for you, or if you need to clarify a few points for a more accurate reflection. This dialogue, called spiritual direction, opens you to a deeper awareness of the divine light, love, and joy guiding your spiritual journey.
